1940 – when, at fifteen, Colin North is sent away from his bomb-ravaged home town to stay with elderly relatives, he finds himself a lonely outsider in their North County village. He works on the farm of the local landowner; and in his spare time he takes to exploring the mountain behind the village, and the caves and pot-holes with which it is honey-combed. His only friend is John Dale, the man in charge of the farm. Then Marthe, a mysterious French girl, a refugee, comes to the village…
At the time after Dunkirk, when invasion seems imminent, odd things begin to happen. Some of the villagers swear they have seen parachutists landing, and men with blackened faces on the hills at night. And though one part of the mystery is solved for Colin when he is invited to join a secret Home Guard force, other curious and increasingly worrying and dangerous events take place – until it is certain that there is a spy in the village. And what of Marthe…?
